1. Plagiarism

...is the act of taking and using the whole or any part of another person's work and presenting it as your own without proper acknowledgement.

proper acknowledgement = citing the author in the correct way.


citation style = rules for creating a reference to a source that includes all the information needed to find that source.


Examples of another person's work:
  • text
  • writings
  • computer programmes
  • web pages
  • online discussions
  • videos
  • music
  • sound recordings
  • images
  • photographs
  • technical drawings
  • inventions
  • research findings
  • diagrams
  • charts
  • art or designs
Note: Plagiarism is a serious offence resulting in failure, suspension, or your removal from the course.

To Avoid Plagiarism...
...always provide a Reference List or Bibliography and cite every source you use, especially when you:
  • Quote - use someone else's exact words, phrases or sentences

  • Paraphrase - change someone else's material to put it into your own words

  • Summarise - give the main ideas of another source in your own words

  • Use someone else's charts, graphs, illustrations, images, codes etc.
