1. Plagiarism

...is the act of taking and using the whole or any part of another person's work and presenting it as your own without proper acknowledgement.

proper acknowledgement = citing the author in the correct way.

citation style = rules for creating a reference to a source that includes all the information needed to find that source.

Examples of another person's work:

text
writings
computer programmes
web pages
online discussions
videos
music
sound recordings
images
photographs
technical drawings
inventions
research findings
diagrams
charts
art or designs

Note: Plagiarism is a serious offence resulting in failure, suspension, or your removal from the course.

2. In-Text Citations

In formal ENG reports, you will need to cite your sources TWICE:

once in your text as a number in square brackets, and
again in a list of numbered sources in your Reference List or Bibliography

Reference List or Bibliography
In keeping with the NUMBER System, your sources are numbered and listed in the order in which they appear in your assignment.

Present your sources in two sections :

Works Cited - list sources that you have cited in your report or assignment

Other Sources - list sources that are NOT cited in your report but which you may have used to find background information

3. Books

Example:

E. M. Bennatan, Catastrophe Disentanglement: Getting Software Projects Back on Track. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Addison-Wesley, 2006.

Remember:

use the exact punctuation
give the initials & surname of the author
have the title in italics, with all important words in Caps (capital letters)
use et al. for three or more authors.

4. Journals

article = section of writing found in a journal, magazine or newspaper

journal = like a magazine which is published a number of times a year, but with more serious content

5. Newspapers

As with journals, the way you cite a newspaper article will depend on whether you found the article in the newspaper itself, or from an online database.

Example from the print form of the newspaper:

6. Web Pages

Often it is hard to find certain details on a web page. No problem! Just cite the page without them - see examples below.

Example of a web page citation with no date:
